Sri Lanka Administrative Service

Sri Lanka Administrative Service Division implements all the policies made by the Public Service Commission in relation to Sri Lanka Administrative Service on the approval of the Secretary.

History of Sri Lanka Administrative Service

The administration of coastal areas of Ceylon was carried out by the officers of East India Company operated from Madras since the coastal areas of the island was brought under the control of British in 1796. Accordingly a group of officers were appointed from Great Britain in 1802 for the administration due to certain practical issues.
That was the beginning of the Civil Service of the country and later on it was named as Ceylon Civil Service 1833 based on the British Civil Service. In 1963 it was renamed as Ceylon Administrative Service with the inclusion of Divisional Revenue Officers’ Service. Further, it has been established as Sri Lanka Administrative Service in 1972 after Sri Lanka became a republic. At present Sri Lanka Administrative Service is implemented as the major civil service of the country.
